Glucotrol (generic name: Glipizide) is an oral medium-to-long acting anti-diabetic drug from the sulfonylurea class. It lowers high blood glucose by increasing the amount of insulin produced by your pancreas and helping the body use insulin efficiently.

Glucotrol is indicated for treating patients with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes) who cannot control blood sugar levels by diet and exercise alone. It may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines.

Glucotrol has no effect on heart rate, blood pressure, electrocardiogram results, respiration or autonomic function in animal studies, and no pharmacological actions on the cardiovascular respiratory or nervous system have been seen in human studies.

Recommendations

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Glucotrol exactly as directed.

Take Glucotrol with breakfast, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Swallow your tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.

Do not take charcoal-containing medicines within 2 hours of Glucotrol tablets. Do not skip meals while taking Glucotrol.

Take Glucotrol regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Glucotrol at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it. Continue taking Glucotrol for as long as your doctor recommends. Make sure you keep enough Glucotrol to last over weekends and holidays.

If you miss a dose of Glucotrol, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. If you miss more than one dose or are not sure what to do, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not give Glucotrol to children.

Keep your tablets at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Precautions

Before taking Glucotrol, tell your doctor if:

you have an allergy to Glucotrol or other medicines;
you have diabetes ketoacidosis; severe kidney, liver or thyroid disease; infection or high temperature;
you are pregnant or intend becoming pregnant; you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed.
